What an MOT tells you
An MOT is a statutory test of specified safety and environmental items at the time of testing. A pass does not confirm that every component is fault-free, that the vehicle will remain reliable or that a seller’s description is accurate.
What an independent inspection adds
An independent inspection can be scoped around the decision or complaint: buying condition, a recurring fault, work completed by another business, diagnostic evidence or a particular system. It can include photographs, scan results, observations and an explanation of limitations.
Why MOT history still matters
Previous MOT results can reveal recurring advisories, mileage patterns and areas worth closer attention. They are useful history, but they do not replace examining the vehicle in its current state.
Choose the test for the question
Use the MOT to meet the statutory testing requirement. Use a pre-purchase or independent technical inspection when you need broader condition evidence or an answer to a defined vehicle question.

Before you arrange an inspection
Does a fresh MOT mean a used car has no faults?
No. It means the vehicle met the MOT requirements when tested, subject to any recorded advisories. It is not a mechanical warranty.
Can Engine Clean carry out an MOT?
Our independent inspection service is not an MOT. If an MOT is required, it must be completed through an authorised MOT testing station.
Should I check MOT history before buying?
Yes. It is a useful part of due diligence and can guide questions, but it should be considered alongside the vehicle’s present condition and records.
