The short version: define the question, preserve the history and record what the vehicle can actually prove.
When a technical report may help
A report may be useful when a fault returned after repair, a dealer disputes the symptoms, a warranty claim has been declined, or you need to establish the vehicle’s present condition. The Motor Ombudsman explains that independent technical evidence can be important in vehicle-sale, warranty and service-and-repair disputes. It does not guarantee that a complaint will succeed.
What we need before inspecting
Send the advert or sales description, invoice, warranty documents, repair invoices, diagnostic reports, messages and a simple dated timeline. Tell us the precise question the inspection needs to address. Preserve the vehicle’s current condition where it is safe to do so and avoid authorising further dismantling or repair before the evidence has been discussed.
What the report records
The agreed scope can include reported history, vehicle identification, mileage, warning messages, diagnostic trouble codes, live data, physical observations, photographs, test methods, findings and limitations. We distinguish facts observed during the inspection from information supplied by other parties.
What it cannot decide
A standard Engine Clean report is technical evidence, not legal advice, a ruling on liability or a CPR Part 35 expert-witness report. Hidden or intermittent defects may not be present during inspection. If court proceedings are contemplated, tell us before booking so the required scope can be considered.
Common questions
Before you arrange an inspection
Will an independent report prove the dealer is responsible?
Not automatically. It records technical findings within an agreed scope. Responsibility and any available remedy depend on the facts, contract and applicable law.
Should the dealer be told before I commission a report?
The Motor Ombudsman recommends telling the business that independent evidence is being considered, giving it an opportunity to respond and avoiding unnecessary cost where possible.
Can Engine Clean repair the vehicle afterwards?
Potentially, but the inspection findings come first. Where independence or a dispute process makes subsequent repair unsuitable, we will explain that boundary.
