Why the message can be misleading
Diagnostic communication relies on more than the ECU. Battery condition, fuses, relays, power and ground circuits, diagnostic wiring and the vehicle network all affect whether a scan tool can make contact. Other modules on the same network may provide useful comparison evidence.
Vehicle testing comes first where possible
We check the relevant supplies, grounds and communication circuits under realistic conditions. Recent repairs, disturbed connectors, corrosion and water ingress are considered because a disconnected or damaged circuit can make a healthy ECU appear dead.
What a controlled bench test adds
When appropriate, a removed ECU can be supplied and interrogated in a controlled environment. If it remains unresponsive with the correct supply and communication conditions, the evidence against the ECU becomes stronger. A bench result still needs to be interpreted against the vehicle history.
Repair, donor or vehicle-side diagnosis
A confirmed internal fault may be repairable. Where repair is unsuitable, a tested compatible donor may be cloned or programmed. If the ECU responds correctly away from the vehicle, the investigation returns to the vehicle-side circuit instead of selling an unnecessary unit.

Does no communication mean the ECU is dead?
Not automatically. Missing power, poor grounds, wiring faults, network problems or a scan-path issue can all prevent communication.
Can you test an ECU off the vehicle?
Many units can be assessed on the bench, but test coverage and conclusions depend on the exact ECU and reported fault.
Should I buy a replacement ECU before testing?
Usually not. Identification and evidence should come first because the original unit may be healthy, repairable or require a different route.
