No crank and no useful response
Possible areas include battery connections, voltage drop, starter motor and control circuit, relays, park or clutch signals, immobiliser authorisation, body control and network communication. The exact path depends on what the vehicle is commanding and what reaches the starter.
Cranks normally but will not run
The test direction changes to engine speed recognition, power supplies, fuel delivery, ignition or injection command, timing, compression, immobiliser status and relevant sensor data. A code scan may help, but some non-starts store little or no obvious fault information.
Why a voltage reading is not enough
Open-circuit battery voltage does not show how the supply behaves under load. Voltage-drop and current testing can expose poor terminals, cables, earth paths or a starter drawing abnormally, even when a basic battery check appears acceptable.
Avoid repeated starting attempts
Continued cranking can flatten the battery, overheat wiring or the starter, flood some engines and disturb the original evidence. If there is smoke, heat, fuel leakage or unusual mechanical noise, stop and arrange recovery.

Can a new battery still be part of a non-start problem?
Yes. Charge state, installation, terminals, cables, charging faults and current draw still need considering.
Does one click mean the starter motor has failed?
Not automatically. The starter, supply, earth, relay control and mechanical load may all need testing.
Can you diagnose a non-start at my home?
Suitable initial checks may be possible mobile. Workshop testing or recovery may be required depending on access, safety and the suspected system.
